More people are running, not walking, to buy used cars. It seems that with the increasing gas prices, everyone is trying to save money and they all seem to think that by purchasing a used car, they are doing just that. However, while buying a used car is often much cheaper than buying a new car, there are still so many things that you have to worry about. For instance, let's look at purchasing a new car from a dealership first. You have been looking and have finally settled on a brand new Toyota hybrid economy-sized car. It will only cost you just over $20,000 and has ten miles on it. The great thing is that it is a hybrid vehicle, which spells out tons of savings down the line for you with regards to money spent to fuel it. It is also a great thing because it is smaller and lighter than a lot of other vehicles such as SUVs (which means that it will get more gas mileage around town and everywhere else. If that wasn't good enough; it's brand spanking new, which means that it's got that "new car smell" about it and the seats haven't been worn in yet. Besides this fact, you've got a great warranty, and you know that if anything bad happens to it (well, almost anything), you can bring it right back to the authorized dealership that you got it at to have them take care of it for you.
Now, let's take a look at buying a used car. Let's pretend that you're going to be a used Honda that's around 10 years old and has over 100,000 miles on it. You think you're getting a fabulous deal on it for only $15,000 because it is still cheaper than buying a brand new car as well as plenty of other used cars. However, you're buying it from an individual owner, there is no warranty on it and even though you took it for a test drive and have ordered the repairs report on it, there will be no telling how long it will last until you start using it for your daily commutes and errands. Now, buying a used car isn't a bad thing and doesn't have to be a bad thing. However, there are several things that you should keep in mind. First of all, always make sure that you meet the owner of the vehicle in a public place. Verify that they, in fact, own the vehicle because it has happened before where a criminal will steal a vehicle and then try to sell it to make some money. This is why it is important to see a copy of their driver's license and make sure that it matches the title and registration of the vehicle. Bring a friend with you who can be witness to all of this going on. Next, make sure you do an external examination of the vehicle, while asking if the vehicle has ever been in any accidents. Take not of any inconsistencies. When you test drive it, see how it handles and ask when the last time was that the vehicle was serviced. If you buy a used vehicle from an authorized dealership, it may cost you slightly more, but a lot of dealerships offer such incentives as extended warranties.
